John McCain, Vaccines, and Autism

Presidential candidate Sen. John McCain believes that mercury—found in many childhood vaccines—is to blame for the increase in autism diagnoses in the United States. Jake Tapper of Political Punch has more:
At a town hall meeting Friday in Texas, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., declared that "there’s strong evidence" that thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative that was once in many childhood vaccines, is responsible for the increased diagnoses of autism in the U.S. -- a position in stark contrast with the view of the medical establishment…

…McCain said, per ABC News' Bret Hovell, that "It’s indisputable that (autism) is on the rise amongst children, the question is what’s causing it. And we go back and forth and there’s strong evidence that indicates that it’s got to do with a preservative in vaccines."
Sen. McCain’s certainly picked a side of the fence—that’s admirable—but the vaccine-autism link is a complex and touchy situation. For example, Tara C. Smith doesn’t agree. Here’s a quote from her blog Aetiology:
Just what we need in the White House; another 4+ years of an anti-science president.
Okay, for the sake of not stirring up unnecessary controversy, let’s first look at the plight of mercury. As Dr. Fuhrman explains, mercury is not something you want to be exposed to. Take a look:
The injection of even this small amount of mercury repeatedly year after year from multiple vaccines can cause neurotoxicity (brain damage). The American Academy of Pediatrics and the US Public Health Service have issued a joint statement calling for the removal of mercury from vaccines. Chronic low dose mercury exposures may cause subtle neurological abnormalities that rear their head later in life.
Now, rather than being partisan over this—focus on the issue of choice. That’s how Dr. Fuhrman approaches vaccinations. You decide what’s good for you, and, you decide what’s good for your kids. He explains:
I strongly support the rights of individuals to do what they want with their own bodies and those of their children, right or wrong. Bombarding the young human with so many immunizations early in life could have far-reaching detrimental effects. We already have decent data linking the early use of hepatitis B vaccine with Multiple Sclerosis. Authorities and physicians are also aware that mercury preservatives in vaccines have long-term harmful effects. Therefore, I do not recommend the "cookbook" approach to vaccines and work with parents to reduce the exposure, eliminate some and delay others to reduce the risk.
The point to be made here—whether you believe vaccines lead to autism or not—is that you should always have the right to chose what you feel is best for you and your family—hopefully Sen. McCain remembers that if he gets into office.

The Most Bitter Debate

There is no greater rancor in medicine than the autism-vaccine debate, and this debate has reached the federal vaccine court where 5000 autistic kids and their families are requesting compensation for vaccine injury.

In California it is a illegal to inject newborns with the mercury containing vaccines (such as the thimerosol Hep-B Shot), and it should be crime in your state as well.

Hepatitis B is transmitted with IV drug abuse, or via promiscuity, both of which are somewhat impossible for newborns. It is much safer to wait until the child is 3 years old to give the shot.

Hopefully, the injection of mercury into newborns will soon become a relic of the ancient past, taking its rightful place in the museum along with bloodletting and leeches. Until then, there is much work to be done to remove mercury from our vaccinations. As a nation, we can’t afford not to.

Thousands of families are reporting their normal children changed after receiving mercury-containing vaccines, and began displaying Autism symptoms (which mimic mercury poisoning).

There are many videos posted on U-Tube showing a typical story. The new born child develops normally, is then vaccinated and becomes autistic. After biologic treatment by a DAN physician the child dramatically improves.

mom of an autistic angel - October 22, 2008 10:10 PM

I think it's great that McCain picks his side of the fence. I don't agree with all things he says but this one I do. I can personally vouch for vaccines triggering my sons autism. Or it did I should say. He's not autistic anymore because his autistic traits lead to his death last summer. Gee thanks MERK ! The know this and the government will NEVER admit to these things. rest assured theres a special place in Hell for these kinds of people.
Someone also stated they hope if McCain winshe doesn't forget we should be able to make that choice or not to. This si true BUT, right not law states vaccines are mandatory so it looks like someone already "forgot" it should be our choice.

Mom of a Diabetic Child - June 28, 2012 1:50 PM

My child has to have four shots of insulin a day containing mercury preservative. There is no other choice for us and I worry every day that the long term effects will devastate her life. When she was four she had a single mandatory Hep-A shot and completely changed. A kid that would laugh and giggle and run to meet her Grandma stopped talking, sat most of the day staring off into space. I worked with her for three years and she is back to pretty much normal, but you can't convince me that one shot didn't cause all that. The new flu shot was given to her two weeks before she was diagnosed with type one diabetes. A condition that doesn't run in any of our families. I don't know what to think. I do know that our choice to not vaccinate is so severely restricted as to be non-existent. Thanks.
