Red Meat Boosts Risk of Metabolic Syndrome

An upcoming study in the January 22, 2008 issue of Circulation claims eating 2 servings of red meat per day increases risk of metabolic syndrome, a precursor to cardiovascular disease and diabetes, by 26%, but eating foods, like fruits and vegetables, lowers risk; CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta investigates.

You should add nuts to that list too! A recent study showed people consuming a Mediterranean diet with a daily serving of nuts, decreased their risk of metabolic syndrome by 13.7%. And other reports link red meat with cancer of the small intestine and heightened susceptibility to bacterial toxins.

The article said it studied middle-aged people who ate 2 servings of red meat per day; I can't think of anybody who regularly eats 2 servings of red meat per day (especially middle-aged people, who are for the most part, more health conscience) so the only point the study proves is that if you're stupid enough to eat red meat twice a day every day when you're in your forties or fifties, you have a bigger risk of heart disease.....what a revelation.

Oh and by the way, the study also said not to stop eating red meat altogether, just keep the intake to less than 3 servings per week. Wonder how an article that says red meat is okay in small amounts ended up on a blog that preaches red meat is the devil?
