Interview with a Nutritarian: Felicia

Felicia didn’t own a scale, and she had stopped going to the doctor because she didn’t want to get on one. Then one day Felicia was visiting her sister and decided to weigh herself. She was shocked to discover that she weighed almost 350 lbs! Thankfully, soon after that she was channel surfing and found the local PBS station broadcasting Dr. Fuhrman’s 3 Steps to Incredible Health, and her life was radically changed! Welcome to Disease Proof, Felicia.

What was your life like before discovering Dr. Fuhrman’s nutritarian approach?

I was a “vegetarian”, or so I thought; not realizing the food I was eating contained animal products. I’d been a vegetarian for many years but continued to gain weight. I got to the point where I didn’t even want to tell people that I was a vegetarian because of my weight. Most people think vegetarians are thin and healthy, and I was not.

I didn’t own a scale because I didn’t want to know how much I weighed. I even stopped going to the doctor, because I didn’t want to get on a scale.

I continued going through life ignoring some of the signs indicating I needed to lose weight. For example, I would get out of breath if I walked a certain distance or if I had to climb a flight of stairs. If I sat on the floor, it was difficult to get back up. My daughter would ask me to go to the mall with her, and I wouldn’t go because my back would hurt if I stood or walked around, and I would get tired or start sweating profusely. I was not living my life to the fullest, because my weight was a hindrance. I felt limited in my activities.

One day I was visiting my sister, and I decided to get on her scale and was shocked to discover that I weighed almost 350 pounds! I thought, “Gee, I’m bigger than a lot of football players!” I decided to go on a diet and lost a few pounds but gained them back and more. That’s when I said to myself, “I have to do something soon, because I refuse to purchase bigger clothes.”

How did you find out about it?

One Saturday I was supposed to go to the movies with my daughter and nephew, but I opted not to go. They went on and I stayed at home and watched television instead. I started scanning through the channels and saw Dr. Fuhrman on our local PBS station, and he was talking about his Eat for Health book. It was refreshing to hear a doctor talk about eating our way back to health instead of using medicine to treat chronic illnesses. As a rule I would’ve turned the channel, but for some reason I continued to watch it. I took notes and started on the program the next day. Soon afterwards my daughter gave me Dr. Fuhrman’s book, Eat to Live, and I used that as a guide.

How do you feel now?

I feel fantastic! I’ve lost 161 pounds so far (my goal is to lose 30 more pounds). My back no longer hurts, I have energy, and I don’t have vertigo episodes anymore. I feel physically liberated from the chains of obesity.  It has completely changed my life for the better!

What success tip(s) to you have to share with others?

  • Make nutritarian eating a lifestyle; not a weight loss program.

  • Be 100% committed.

  • Take it one day at a time.

Congratulations Felicia ~ you are a wonderful inspiration! Keep up the great job!

Very glad that Dr. Furhman was on tv for you & motivated you to start eating healthy the very next day. Congratulations on looking so fantastic now but, more importantly, being healthy from the inside out. Don't ever go back as most people do with diets & all the fads. No junk food is worth it. Thanks for sharing your story to motivate who knows how many people that might just want to give up.

Thank you, Dr. Fuhrman for inspiring my friend to a life a good eating and health! :)

Felicia - May 4, 2013 6:40 AM

Hi Roy,
Thank you for the encouraging comment.
For me, I never wanted to take any kind of appetite suppressants for weight loss because I felt as though I was not dealing with my real issues. Appetite suppressants will just mask the problem because once you stop taking them, the problem still exists. Once I eliminated the foods with little nutritional value such as, refined and processed foods, foods made with white flour, rice, pasta, pizza, breads, foods with sugar and salt, and dairy products to name a few and started eating the green vegetables, berries, onions, mushrooms, beans, raw seeds and nuts (GBOMBS) I noticed that I wasn't as hungry because my body was receiving the proper nutrients. These natural foods acted as an appetite suppresant for me. So I don't see any nutrional value in artificial appetite suppressants.

Congrats, Felicia! You look and must feel amazing! I wonder if you have any advice for someone who is addicted to those foods and how to battle those times when all you want to do is go back to eating the way one used to. I have "started" this lifestyle numerous times and have never been able to stick with it. Any advice? Thank you!

Liz - May 12, 2013 1:18 AM

Shelia - May 12, 2013 6:23 PM

Very inspiring !!!!! Makes me want to get back on track. I know I feel better when I eat right!!!

Felicia - May 13, 2013 9:55 AM

Hi Kaitlin,

Thank you for the wonderful comments. I believe that knowledge is extremely powerful and once I learned from Dr. Fuhrman about how I was damaging my body by eating those addictive and non-nutritional foods, I realized I had to stop eating them. Not only were those foods causing the addiction but I was on the fast path of getting diseases such as diabetes, cancer, strokes, heart attacks, high blood pressure, and arthritis to name a few. Knowing this is my incentive and my weapon when battling those times of reverting back to my old habits. I began to replace the addictive foods with more nutritional foods such as green vegetables, berries/fruits, onions, mushrooms, beans, raw seeds/nuts and other super foods to help build my immune system. My craving for the addictive foods began to go away and that's when I began to feel better and had more energy. I understood that I had to wake up and take control of my health.

Kaitlin, I know it's not easy but I know in my heart you could do it. I encourage you to continue on the healthy eating path and your health and your body will thank you. Keep fighting and don’t give up!

Felicia - May 13, 2013 10:30 AM

Hi Liz,

Thank you very much for the encouraging words. Unfortunately, I do not have a list of meals but Dr. Fuhrman has some great recipes on his website and in his book. The foods that helped with my weight loss were the salads made with various raw vegetables such as lettuce, cucumbers, cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, onions, mushrooms, broccoli, kale, and spinach. I would also add either low sodium garbanzo beans or low sodium black beans to the salad. I would have some steamed broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, spinach or cabbage as well as Dr. Fuhrman’s Supreme Greens and his other soups. Also, I would eat berries, strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries as well as other fruits. I included the raw seeds and nuts, such as chia seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews, walnuts and almonds to name a few. Sometimes for breakfast I would eat rolled oats and sprinkle either flax seeds and sweeten it with either dates or raisins. I tried to eat these foods every day and this was more than enough for me and I lost weight quickly. Not only did I lose weight but I was building my immune system to protect my body from chronic illnesses and diseases. The important thing is to incorporate these healthy foods and eliminate all of the processed and refined/sugary, high sodium, non-nutritional foods because these unhealthy foods contribute to diseases. I hope this helps.

God Bless You Too!

Ben and Gwen,

Thank you for your encouraging comments and Gwen, once you make up in your mind to start eating healthy, you will not regret it. Your body will reward you with excellent health and energy.

VoiceBliss - May 28, 2013 2:17 PM

You are so inspiring. I need to lose about 150-160 lbs and am terrified to really commit. I can't seem to go more than 6 weeks w/o blowing it. My body hurts so much-yet food is my comfort or dragging myself through life. It also helps keep my feelings in check and mouth shut around a borderline mother. I feel so naked, raw, and unprotected w/o food. How did you get brave enoughn do this. I want to eat all the time. I am 5'5 and almost 300 pounds.

Felicia - June 5, 2013 8:57 AM

Hi VoiceBliss,

Thank you. I strongly believe that once you commit to eating the healthier foods such as fresh green vegetables, onions, mushrooms, low sodium beans, raw seeds and nuts, berries and eliminate the foods with sugar, salt, dairy and processed/refined foods, you will begin to feel better physically and emotionally. Those foods do not provide a lot of nutritional value, are harmful to the body and are addictive. On Dr. Fuhrman's nutritarian plan, you don't have to deprive yourself or feel raw or unprotected because you will be able to eat plenty of high nutrient foods that taste good.
I don't know if it was bravery but I knew I had to do something about my weight and my health and fortunatley my prayer was answered when I came across Dr. Fuhrman. I thank God because I feel so much better and I'm able to do things I haven't done in years. I can relate to what you're going through because I too wanted to eat all the time or thought about eating all the time, but I encourage you to stick with this plan. In my opinion, it is by far the best plan compared to all of the others. You could do it VoiceBliss, don't give up!!!
