Peanut Butter, All Sorts of Recalled!

It’s been in the news for a couple weeks now. But in case you haven’t heard. There’s a big peanut butter-salmonella outbreak going on. Kellogg’s recalled many products, like snack crackers, using peanut butter after people in 43 states fell ill and at least six have died; the Associated Press reports.
Actually, this isn’t the first peanut butter-salmonella recall. Back in 2007, Peter Pan and Wal-Mart brand peanut butter sickened over 300 people in 41 states. That’s why I buy natural peanut butter. I’d rather stir my peanut butter, than puke it up!
Oh, and this summer tomatoes got a bad rap for salmonella too. But it turned out to be some ornery jalapeño peppers instead. Muy mal.

Couldn't the same thing happen to natural peanut butter?
Hey Michael-
I suspect it probably could. But I'd be willing to bet the chances are lower. I could be wrong. Just a hunch.
Peace.

why not buy fresh organic peanuts (or other nuts, for that matter) and grind your own nut butter in the Vitamix???
Yum!

Hey Diane-
Great suggestion! But, that might not be practical for everyone. For example, I don't even own a VitaMix.
Peace.

Didn't a whole bunch of spinach get recalled a couple years ago for the same reason? Just goes to show whether it's meat, dairy, veggies, or nuts, no type of food is immune to infestation.
True, no food is immune to infestation, but if I recall correctly the spinach fiasco was caused by contaminated runoff from factory farms. If they cut down on the farming of animals then the soil would be less contaminated. Meat is dangerous to even vegetarians.
OK I understand the outbreak was traced to a factory that makes peanut butter and peanut paste? for use in other processed food- hence the "snack crackers". This factory does not produce any peanut butter in jars for retail sale. Processed food like peanut butter snack crackers is JUNK FOOD, so we don't eat it right? Unfortunately the factory does sell peanut butter used in institutions, Like nursing homes and hospitalsleaving the old and ill people vulnerable.
I think we are safe grinding our own at a natural food store from whole peanuts.
Today a bunch of granola bars were recalled- including some "health food" kinds. Hopefully none of us eat granola bars.
