Kids Talking Spinach...

I’m not much of a kid person. But these kids are pretty freaking cute. It’s a commercial for an insurance company, which stinks, but the little boy is priceless. It’s spinach, not Spanish!

Now, not all kids are enthusiastic about veggies. This little girl is totally whacked out about green beans. She REALLY doesn’t want them. Maybe she needs a visit from Captain Vegetable!

Vegetables are inappropriate foods for children of that age. A small amount here and there is okay, but spinach, full of oxalates is out of the question in all but the most modest amounts. Children's natural aversion to highly fibrous foods and bitter foods is not a flaw, but a very important instinctual part of their evolutionary fine-tuning. It assists to make sure that their young digestive and excretory organs are given an appropriate amount of time to develop before consuing such foods. Remember, they start on an all-animal, zero fiber diet in the form of milk and gradually begin incorporating other foods, which in a perfect world wouldn't even begin until the age of 2,3, or even 4 years old.

Your claim is unspeakably incorrect. You'll have to provide some science to back up that comment. You're very, very incorrect. That is a very dangerous recommendation. I suggest you do some reading.

A public blog site opens up the potential of all types of far-out and even dangerous comments. I was asked to add a brief comment so as to not leave such a misguided and dangerous statement unchallenged. Children would fail to thrive and even die if they followed the advice of this nut, who is suggesting children remain on breast milk with no other food until age 2, 3 or even 4.

I have even been involved as a “medical/nutritional expert” testifying in some extremely sad child neglect cases where people with unusual nutritional views have harmed and even killed their children adhering to unusual and fanatical nutritional viewpoints like this.

Vegetables are indeed the healthiest foods to feed as your baby’s first foods, which should begin soon after the age of 6 months. Before the age of 6 months a diet exclusively of breast milk is best. The children in the video appear to be age 2 – 3 and certainly in that age bracket all vegetables are excellent foods.

Soon after the six month birthday, cooked and mashed squash, string beans, carrots and peas and sweet potato, artichoke hearts are examples of vegetables low in nitrates and oxalates and are excellent food choices. High nitrate vegetables should be minimized in the first 9 months of life, especially not to contain much of these foods; they include spinach, cabbage turnip greens, collard greens, swiss chard and beet tops. However, there is no reason to fear eating spinach as part of a balanced diet after the first year.
