Seven Best and Seven Worst Foods for Health and Longevity

From the library of Dr. Fuhrman.com:

Because food has the power to heal, my patients often ask me for my top list of healthy food – the anti-oxidant foods, heart healthy foods, and nutritious foods that are central to the Eat To Live program. These high nutrient foods, consumed regularly, will contribute to your health and longevity. What you eat -- now and when you were growing up -- dramatically affects the state of your health. The effect is cumulative, influencing everything from the amount of energy you have (or lack), to your emotional state, medical condition, and ultimately longevity

Top Seven Foods for Good Health and Longevity
  • Black raspberries
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Flax Seeds
  • Green Leafy Vegetables
  • Tomatoes
  • Broccoli sprouts
The healthy and nutritious foods are high antioxidant foods, primarily fruits and vegetables. I selected these healthy foods because they contain the most powerful phytochemicals and anthocyanins which illustrate strong inhibition of chemocarcinogens.

Other foods with high antioxidant and high anti-cancer potential include walnuts, sunflower seeds, pomegranates, beets, cabbage, peppers, and parsley. Make your diet strongly cancer-protective and longevity-favorable by including these highly beneficial, nutritious foods.

A good way to think about nutritious food: Produce is the most important health care your money can buy.

Food also has the potential to harm, and these are effective foods for those attempting to die younger. One of my daughters calls this list the Seven Foods of Death.

Worst Seven Foods for Health and Longevity
  • Butter
  • Cheese
  • Potato Chips and French Fries
  • Doughnuts
  • Salt
  • Sausage, hot dogs
  • Pickled, smoked or barbequed meat
Foods high in saturated fat and trans fat are consistently associated with high cancer rates. Cheese and butter typically contain over ten times as much saturated fat as fish and white meat chicken and turkey.

Salt has been consistently linked to stomach cancer and stroke, even in populations that eat diets low in saturated fat.

Add the carcinogenic potential from heated and overcooked oils (usually trans containing) delivered in doughnuts and fries with the powerful cancer inducing properties of carbohydrates cooked at high heat (acrylamide formation) and you have a great cancer potion.

Needless to say, I advise people to avoid the foods on my “worst list” entirely.

The best foods to eat are the healthy, nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables. By making these antioxidant foods the major portion of your diet, you can protect yourself against cancer and other serious diseases. As you extend your youthful vigor into later years, you have contributed to your longevity by Eating to Live with a healthy, nutritious diet.

"WARNING

What is the basis for this warning?

Sue - March 22, 2007 1:03 PM

All this "healthy" food isn't going to do a bit of good unless one can find a source that isn't contaminated, which is no small trick anymore. You want to BEWARE of something--don't, under any cirmstances, eat produce from California. The majority of fruit and vegetables produced in the state of California are sprayed with Auxigro (see the Truth in Labeling site for more info), which is a form of MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)and causes more health problems than you can believe. I wouldn't have believed it myself, but I developed an intolerance to MSG about 10 years ago and it's something I have to live with every day. So be very careful where you buy your fruits and vegetables.

may i ask you a question? my boyfriend is a 'germaphobe' (fear of germs) and he's anal about cleanliness. he wont even freeze an open bacon pack because he says pork has the deadliest food disease there is and you can die of the bacteria it gives. how true is this??? please im dying to know. thank you!!

Dorrel - September 12, 2008 5:21 PM

God says pork should not be eaten because he made them to be the scavangers of the earth. The white part in the bacon that you think is fat, is actually concentrated pus. Pigs do not have pores in their skin so the dead white cells have no where to go except concentrate in the body. God made our body and He knows that pork was not to enter the human body. Sometimes doctors cannot determine why we are sick because we are carrying diseases meant for pigs. The same is for all Shell fish, they are scavangers of the ocean, not for human consumption. They were meant to eat the poop from the floor of the ocean. Do you remember the scean in Nemo where the crabs were fighting for food around the septic pipes? What do you think they were eatint? Read the Book of Leviticus chapter 11 in the Bible. There you will see what God said we can and cannot eat. He made us, He knows how best to take care of the body that belongs to Him.

becky - September 16, 2008 5:09 PM

I scoured the internet to back up your factual statement about the white stuff on bacon being pus.... I cannot find anything. Can you please tell me how you came to this conclusion? Thanks!

kurt - November 1, 2008 10:56 AM

Dorrel,

This is a site about food safety, not Bible nonsense. Stick to science, no mythology. Dead white cells in pigs are secreted just as humans do, in the urine.

LEN - January 17, 2009 11:04 PM

Where do they come up with this stuff?Butter is bad? What do you recommend margerine? We are fatter and unhealthier than ever on the low fat High carb scam. The proofs in the pudding!

Elizabeth Bamrick - January 27, 2009 6:07 PM

I attended Dr. Furhman's seminar in EH and he said Mangos and SweeT Potatoes actually
everything but butter, cheese and egg yolk and milk were part of his nutritonal diet
Why say it's cancerous???

Mary - February 4, 2009 6:05 PM

What the? Sicne when does vitamin C cause cancer?

Brad - February 12, 2009 11:14 PM

Yeah, it's scary wondering about what's on our produce from the grocery store. So why not take matters into your own hands and grow it yourself? So you don't have any gardening experience, and you don't have much free time, and you don't know where to start. Check out a movie called Establishing a Food Forest: The Permaculture Way. It walks you through how to create a forest of food with very little energy input and maximum product output. A brilliant strategy from a brilliant concept... Permaculture. Everybody should have one!

Sue,

Regarding produce from California:

This is from the Truth In Labeling website (written in March '08):

California was the only state that had restrictions on AuxiGro use. But Auxein/Emerald BioAgriculture was chipping away at the restrictions. It would appear, however, than on December 31, 2007, Emerald BioAgriculture did not renew its registration in California, and reliable sources tell us that AuxiGro is no longer sold in the United States.

Red pepper is also very high in antioxidants, and may help to prevent cancer.

mike - October 4, 2009 9:53 AM

Hell Cynthia

I understand your concern, but if the fellow care enough
for you and himself, he should take some nutrition claass
before he jumps to conclusions of such nonesense.
There are so much good medical and nutrtional journals one
should read. I don't care much about meat but not because
bible say so or somebody say so.
Go buy some good nutritional journals/medical or go to lib.
read all about it.
Americans, in general, usued to brag about civilized nation,
but you people say that Americans can not laugh at others.

Even if - October 5, 2009 9:27 PM

even if those are the bad I have seen substitues like i cant belive its not butter i looked and studied em and the spray is the best i use it all the time and i still got that 6 pack goin. i also eat town house toppers with no sat or trans fat very good and gud substitute for ritz crackers and chips.
for donuts just dont eat them please! my bro stopped eating those donuts and he lost so much pounds from them one of the worse things ever!

just look for hydronated and stay away from corn syrup as much as possible

oh yea its possible to cook healthy fries but at home it has a lil sat fat but no trans fat my uncle does it he wont tell me how lol

Daryl - April 17, 2010 11:23 PM

I've lost 20 lbs since New Years without dieting. My take on this is to eat less and try to eat healthy food. Having said that, I do have the occasioal treat! If I feel like one, I eat a donut...one! I like Root Beer and Coke and now drink maybe a can or two a month! McDonald's, we all know its not good food, maybe once a month. Sweets, I don't even have them in my house as a rule. Processed foods are the thing I try to avoid at all costs!

I'm not a slave to the whole can't eat this, can't eat that way of thinking. Use common sense when eating, eat less and if you want an ice cream or frozen yougurt once in awhile enjoy it!

sara - April 30, 2010 7:20 AM

yes, daryl is correct.
i went for a course for two weeks and we stayed in a hotel,
6 meals food. i thought i am going to put on weight but suprisingly i lost almost 1.5 kg. Unbelieveable isn't.
but the fact is you can eat as many times you want but in a smaller portions. please do not starve......

Mike Eves - June 3, 2010 5:36 AM

The problem is that the majority of people don't want to to eat correctly (or work out - hard), So it doesn't matter what the theory of best foods being proposed or argued for, fat & unhealthy people just don't want to know! What they really want is to go to bed fat, have a magic fairy wave her a wand overnight, and to wake up slim.
No effort, no responsibility, and no penance toward their poor behaviour previously (because, of course, it was never their fault in the first place). For the rest of us: Just eat as natural as possible, if it's processed, leave well alone. Take an holistic approach to eating, 95% plants (that you grow yourself) with variety. Forget about calories, just eat as much plants as possible and exercise at a high intensity- yes, it's that simple (but the diet industry would never admit to that!). And by the way - ice cream, junk food, sweets etc are not treats. We're brought up on this treat nonense - how can something toxic be a treat? If you want a treat have a massage, a banana or go for a walk. Either you want to be healthy or you don't.

Suzi - September 1, 2010 7:01 AM

Everything in moderation is the key. If you must have a soda now and then, make sure it is not diet. Look at how much sodium is in diet soda! Lower fat diet through moderation, some exercise and veg/fruit smoothie shakes for snacks between meals is my diet plan. I also try to wash my produce best I can, even the outside skin of watermelons.

Emmanuel - February 9, 2012 8:49 AM

The kind of ckches you should be doing depend on your risk factors. Ask your dermatologist about a surveillance program that is appropriate for you.

Nicki - June 13, 2012 2:19 PM

I've lost four pounds in the last month, and here's what I've done. A banana and one egg(no salt) for breakfast. For lunch: A small salad. At dinner I eat something that actually tastes good. I snack on fruit, veggies and nuts throughout the day. I ONLY drink water. Ever. And I'm a long time vegiterian. :)

JAN - July 14, 2012 2:49 PM

If we listened to all those DON"T EAT THIS, DON"T EAT THAT. We would ALL starve to death.Everything causes everything. I thought to myself. I'm washing my veggies an fruits very good. Listening to OLD HEALTHY people. An switching to boco burgers, which by the way are very ummy. Using soy an lactaid milks an eating turkey sauages, hot dogs. All taste very good. An I take probotics(Good bateria) to protect me. It's all working very good; I also take vitiams an exerize. I use to get VERY, VERY, VERY sick not any more.Listen to what YOUR body is telling you :when you eat. An About God an Holy wisdom, Trust him. To give you wisdom to make right choices.Probotics is VERY important if you want to stay healthy ,that much I HAVE learned.Someones gonna say something about chicken an turkey. GET A LIFE!
