Picking a Persimmon

Not sure when to buy your persimmons. This video makes it perfectly mushy—oops—I mean, perfectly clear. Take a look:

The persimmon stuff was cool, but she lost me with the Romaine lettuce.

Actually, I think she's got it backwards. The flatter ones like the Fuyu can be eaten crutchy. It's the taller ones like the Hachya that can't be eaten until ripen.

My mama always told me to eat persimmons when they're squishy...I don't know what she was going on about w/the romaine either, so I wouldn't worry about it ;) (Looked like a perfect head of lettuce to me!)

Yes that was a Fuyu and does not have to be soft and certainly not squishy. I like them softish though-if I can wait that long. Hachiya persimmons should be squishy. Never eat a Hachiya that's at all hard. It will be astringant and you will not be happy. Oh and Sharon fruit are usually just Fuyus from Israel.
