Your Doctor Doesn't Exercise

At my gym there’s an obese doctor. He’s a sweet old guy. But I can’t imagine taking health advice from him. And new research in the British Journal of Sports Medicine claims only 21% of doctors get the recommended amount of exercise. They blame lack of time, no motivation or lack of workout facilities. Even those with on-the-job gyms failed to exercise; from Health Magazine.

"...lack of time, no motivation or lack of workout facilities."

Interesting, they give the same excuses that everyone else gives!

One would hope that whatever motivation it takes to overcome those roadblocks for us normal people would be greater for doctors because they see first hand the effects of unhealthy lifestyles everyday.

Looks like it takes more than that. Too bad.

It's an illusion to think doctors practice what they preach. You will be surprise that a good number of doctors are overweight and have diabetes, high bp, high cholesterol, heart disease, etc. Just look up physician health studies.

I know my doctor exercises, since the only doctor I trust is Dr. Furhman.

Most conventional doctors are just salesmen for the pharmaceutical companies, and haven't the slightest interest in health. Actually, any bit of health diminishes the market for their products. (There was a series of articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer a few years ago about doctors being paid by the companies for each prescription for the company's products that the doctor writes.) Don't expect them to have any motivation for exercise.

Do you know what amazes me? The incredible amount of faith people place in their M.D. to take care of them. The thing that amazes me about is how unhealthy the doctor is. You have this out-of-shape, unhealthy person giving "health" advice to an out-of-shape, unhealthy person. Thank goodness there are M.D.'s like Dr. Joel to break the cycle.
