The commuter fee (not staying at the Westin) is the same price as the Early Bird fee (staying at the Westin)?

I asked about the commuter and early bird fee. I was told that the early bird basically gets you the hotel for free. It seems that if you can, might as well get the early bird and save the trekking. I was thinking of the commuter but it does not really pay. I would like to go if I can. It is still expensive. However it is like a mini-getaway without the plane trip for those of us in the general area.
