A message from Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

Happy Holidays and A New Way to Celebrate

For many of us, the holidays are a wondrous time when we are joyful for what life has provided and we celebrate the season with our family and friends. We are usually offered an abundance of everything. Thanksgiving dinner and holiday parties are festive times that present us with many choices. We also have the choice to spread good will to others.

Unfortunately, the holidays are also associated with trips to the emergency room and deaths from dangerous eating. The emergency room doctors call it “holiday heart” as the busiest time at hospitals are from heart attacks, strokes and other emergencies that occur the next morning after big holiday meals.

So many people use the holiday season as an excuse for gluttony and addictive binges. My team here and I thought about how we could help to encourage people to enjoy the holidays more, with great tasting holiday food that is healthy too, and have as many people as possible set a good example to encourage people to have a truly healthful and happy holiday season.

I take bad nutrition seriously because people die from it. When junk food is eaten, including the traditional, highly-toxic foods served at the holidays, you may get momentary pleasure as it passes the lips in a short amount of time, but the results continue on to compromise your health.  Additionally, not having good health magnifies every emotional problem plaguing your life and exasperates the holiday blues.  Healthy recipes and treats can taste great! It may take more effort to prepare, but there is really no reason to sacrifice your good health.

My Six Week Challenge is dedicated to helping you make the best choices; the ones that will allow you to achieve overall health and quality of life. By pledging to take the challenge, you'll be celebrating your health instead of simply indulging in destructive “fake food”. Can you find friends or family members to join you in taking the challenge too?

I have created an opportunity for those straddling the fence of commitment. For those who step up to this challenge over the next six weeks and commit to a few simple guidelines throughout the holidays, I am offering:

The challenge involves only a few simple promises to make, taken from my book, Eat To Live.

Here are the fundamentals:

  • Eat a large salad every day
  • Enjoy a generous serving of steamed greens with mushrooms and onions
  • Satisfy your sweet tooth with three fresh fruits a day
  • Have at least one fulfilling serving of beans each day

Here's what you are promising to omit:

  • Avoid white flour
  • Avoid sugars & artificial sweeteners

Throughout the challenge, you will have plenty of support. We will answer your questions online in the Member Center. We encourage you to log your progress with "My Health Manager." Seasoned veterans of the Eat To Live diet-style will also be there to help you.

Here is how you get started:

Step 1: Join us on Facebook to share this exciting experience and encourage your friends to also make the commitment for a better life and incredible holiday.

Step 2: If you are not already a member of my online Member Center, sign up for your FREE six week membership*.

Step 3: Enjoy the holidays!

There is more – the challenge is just the start! By joining the challenge you will have the opportunity to participate in a contest where you may be eligible to win an all expense paid trip to my 6th annual 2011 Health Getaway in Park City, Utah at The Grand Summit Hotel at The Canyons resort. The winner or winners will be chosen based on their documented results during the challenge and into the new year. All participants of the challenge will receive details in the following weeks.

I hope you enjoy this holiday gift to help spread the message of good health and healthy eating.

* A $44.95 value. *Offer valid thru December 4th.  Dr. Fuhrman's online store software requires credit card information in order to process an order; including this free offer.  Your credit card will automatically be billed $14.95/month after the initial 6-week period unless cancelled.  You will be notified in plenty of time to cancel if you decide to discontinue the ongoing support of the member center after the holidays.

I am disappointed in your "challenge." It is obviously set up to make money as the 6 week "free" membership comes with having to give one's credit card information and then if you forget or something happens, after the 6 weeks are up you are billed! If you really wanted to help people and intended to truly give them a "free" membership for six weeks, there would be no credit card information demanded and then if someone wanted to continue after the six weeks, he or she could do so.

I'm into a contest for sure! I notice you mention winners are chosen on their "documented results". By documented do you mean self-documented, or like a video-log, or like - to be eligible we need to see a doctor and get weighed and have blood work done?

Also - my friend is getting back into the country next week (away on a vacation). I know he'll want to start too, and I saw the 6-week offer is valid through Dec 4th - can he start when he gets into town on Thursday and still be eligible for the contest?

This is sooooooooo great. Thank you, Dr. F, for offering all this support on your own dime! I'm not going to waste the chance, for sure!!!

any chance there will be weekly menus and a shopping list? That would really help...

I just signed up! I'm so excited, and very relieved. This is just what I need to stay on track. Thank you Dr. Fuhrman!

I tried to sign-up for the free 6 week membership, but the site keeps asking for my credit card number, even though it states my total is $0.00.? Can you please assist in how I can go about registering for the free membership?

Emily Boller - November 20, 2010 1:16 PM

The credit card requirement is a technology issue. Dr. Fuhrman's online store software requires the credit card information in order to process any order, including a free offer. Everyone who participates in the challenge WILL be notified in plenty of time to cancel the future, monthly billings if he/she decides to discontinue the ongoing support after the holidays.

Dr. Fuhrman is giving this as a free offer to anyone who wants the additional support of the member center over the holiday season. Technically, there was no other way to process the free offer in order to launch this challenge in time for the holidays.

I got completely free of food addiction, lost 100 lbs, AND get my health and life back with the support of the member center. I couldn't have done it alone. With the ability to ask the physicians medical questions, listen to the many helpful teleconferences, read the tutorials and newsletters, and seek encouragement and success tips from other nutritarians; it's a bargain that truly is unbelievable. It's an invaluable, priceless gift.

How do we document our results? Did I miss something in the directions they gave us?

Kim - November 20, 2010 3:17 PM

For the most part, I eat as a nutritarian, but I do enjoy an occassional beer or glass of wine, especially during the holidays. I would like to participate in the 6-wk challenge, but does alcohol fall under "avoid sugars?" Please forgive me if this is a stupid question! Thanks, Kim

Does this challenge apply to people who are already members? I am not on facebook and don't really want to be- am I excluded? I think there may be other members who might want to particapate.

Emily Boller - November 20, 2010 8:32 PM

Dr. Fuhrman said that an occasional beer or glass of wine is okay during the holidays, but make that meal especially healthful.

Emily Boller - November 20, 2010 8:52 PM

Document your results with videoes and photos of yourself (and your family); with good stories to match.

All submissions will be reviewed, and the winners will get an all-expense-paid health Getaway at the Grand Summit in Park City, Utah the last week of June. There will be other prizes as well.

You do not have to be on facebook to participate in the holiday challenge.

Emily Boller - November 22, 2010 7:07 AM

Physician documentation is not necessary as long as you have great photos/videos to document the progress.

And sure, your friend can join when he gets back. Please let us know his name for administrative purposes. You may send it via the Disease Proof messages if so desired. Click on the "contact" icon at the top of the Disease Proof website.

Thank you, Emily, for taking the time to respond to our questions. Kim

Could the "occasional beer or glass of wine during the holidays" be like the first shot of dope that gets the person hooked, especially if the person is in an alcohol-guzzling or dope-shooting environment? Is it an excuse to rationalize or defend one's addiction?

Leah Jacobson - December 10, 2010 11:55 PM

Is it too late to join in ?

Emily Boller - December 11, 2010 7:10 AM

It's not too late to join in the Six Week Holiday Challenge, although the free offer to join the member center has now expired. However, one can join the member center anytime and still participate in the challenge. There is valuable information and support from both the physicians via Ask the Doctor and other members who completely understand the power of food addiction and have gained victory over it; plus, the many great educational tutorials: teleconferences by Dr. Fuhrman, newsletters, articles; and discounts on vitamins and products, etc.

The member center is a priceless investment into one's health. Like Dr. Fuhrman has mentioned, "Health is our greatest wealth."

Hurrah for the free info, it is great that more folks are heading for a vegetable/pulse-centric diet. However, I call BS on the "technology issue" that requires credit card info to let people into the plan. Designers of shopping-cart systems, etc, use bogus accounts to test the site. You could have your site designer mirror the content behind the credit card gate at some other link. There are a great number of ways to make your content actually fully free to all.
To protect your content after 6 weeks of open access would be darn tough, though, so I don't blame you for not wanting to make it actually free to read for credit-card haters. But please don't make technology mystically unable to un-fetter info, that's just not true.
But I think it is great that you are pushing a veg-based life, thank you for that.
