On Manager's Special 5.26.09

Some cut up broccoli $1.00.

Six big kohlrabi bulbs $1.99.

And four cucumbers $1.00.

Today's total, only $3.99. It’s pretty cool when you find something exotic like kohlrabi on the cheap.

Nice finds!!

After struggling with $200/week grocery bills down the Jersey Shore I just found a really cheap Farmer's Market in Ocean Township... if anyone reading lives locally it's Rt 35 Farmers Market, just after Pep Boys on the North Side.

what do you do with the kohlrabi?

We go to the Rt, 206 market or sometimes the rt. 28 market. They are all almost clones.

Having lived in central Europe for a decade kohlrabi was one of my favourite vegetables. I nearly always ate them raw, however they are also use in soups. Kohlrabi can become 'woody' if picked too late however when it's fresh it's crunchy. Kohlrabi can be grated in salads or can be cut into wedges and used to scoup up a dip (like carrots or celery).
I nearly always purchased kohlrabi fresh from markets. Currently I'm growing kohlrabi and they will be ready for harvest in about a week or so. The leaves can also be used.
