I Can Has Swiss Chard!

I consider myself a rough and tough guy, but I got to be honest. I love kitties! And I’m addicted to I Can Has Cheez Burger. In addition to ALL the news I read everyday, I’m a regular visitor of the site. I suspect many of you are too. So when I saw this picture. I freaked.

It’s certainly better than when your cat leaves a disemboweled mouse on your front steps. Now, this frisky feline isn’t the only vegetable loving cat we’ve found. This little guy goes crazy for baby spinach and this tuxedo cat just can’t get enough broccoli. Nom, nom, nom!

Eating to Live on the Outside: Bombay Indian Restaurant

I feel like I say it every Saturday, but I’m wiped out! I have just enough energy to take a “trip” to California, because this week Eating to Live on the Outside is off to San Francisco to grab a bite to eat at Bombay Indian Restaurant. And at first glance it looks okay.

Now, I just finished sifting through the menu. Some stuff you want to avoid, like the lamb and cheese, but there’s plenty of good food too. Here’s a quick list of potential options:

Cucumber Salad

  • Indian style cucumber, tomato and onion; you can never go wrong with tomatoes.

Mixed Salad

  • Green salad, cucumber and tomato; nice and simple.

Bombay Vegetable Masala

  • Mixed vegetables cooked with bell peppers, spinach, onions, cheese, ginger, garlic and spices; lot’s of great vegetables, but I’ll ditch the cheese.

Allu Bengan

  • Eggplant and potatoes cooked with herbs and spices; I’m Italian, naturally I love eggplant.

Mixed Vegetables

  • Vegetables cooked in a light curry; I wonder what veggies are in this.

Mushroom Mattar

  • Green peas, mushrooms and spices with coconut sauce; its hard for me to pass up mushrooms.

Allu Gobi

  • Cauliflower and potatoes in spiced gravy; looks like another good one.

Sag Allu

  • Fresh spinach cooked with potatoes, herbs and spices; put spinach in something and I’ll probably eat it.

Allu Mattar

  • Potatoes and green peas cooked in curry sauce; not too bad.

Bombay Vegetable Coconut Curry

  • Fresh vegetables cooked with coconut curry sauce; I’m cool with this.

Bhindi Masala

  • Okra cooked with chopped onions, tomatoes and spices; I still haven’t tried okra yet!

Chana Palak

  • Fresh cut spinach cooked with garbanzo beans and spices; love that spinach.

Vegetable Biryani

  • Saffron rice with fresh vegetables, nuts and herbs; looks okay.

Bombay serves up a lot of vegetables, and beans—lots of beans—you know what that means! Now, if I REALLY had to pick something the Mixed Salad or the Cucumber Salad are probably the safest bet, but I could be lured into ordering the Bombay Vegetable Masala.

Okay, time for you guys to get off your lazy butts. Flip through Bombay’s menu and tell me what you like. Oh, and if any of you ever go to any of these places, say so in the comments. If not, I’ll thrash you!

Cookies and Milk and E. coli

Milk and cookies may seem harmless. It’s not. On Friday, Nestlé Toll House recalled refrigerated cookie dough products due to risk of E. coli contamination, suspected to have sickened 66 people in 28 states. Health officials say the elderly, pregnant women and anyone with a compromised immune system should avoid the raw cookie dough. E. coli can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, resulting in kidney damage and even death; HealthDay News reports.

Yuck. I may have a cookie from time to time, but milk! No way. Our food safety is a mess. We all remember the spinach-E. coli crisis in 2006 and then this year’s melamine contaminated milk. Oh, and don’t forget. In February, a study found 20% of Japan’s chicken is tainted with salmonella.

In related news, Nestlé shut down the cookie dough plant linked to E. coli, as a result 200 workers were laid off. So far, a total of 86.4 million cookies' worth of dough has been recalled.

Omega-3's May Save Your Eyesight

Go eat some walnuts! Because a new study in the British Journal of Ophthalmology claims diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids may slow the development of age-related macular degeneration. An analysis of nearly 3,000 people, randomly assigned to take three different vitamin supplements or a placebo, revealed no matter the supplement, participants with higher intake of omega-3’s were at lower risk for the progression of advanced macular degeneration; Reuters reports.

Flaxseeds are another powerful source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3’s are amazing! They’ve been linked to improved insulin tolerance, protection against prostate cancer and prevention of repeat strokes. Oh, and citrus fruits also help stave off age-related macular degeneration.

And last year, a report showed antioxidant carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, found in leafy green vegetables—such as collard greens, spinach and kale—promote eye health too.

Citrus Fruits Help Stave Off Vision Loss

Its not just citrus fruits, new findings in the journal Ophthalmology suggest older adults eating a lot of leafy greens, citrus fruits and fish are less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a major contributor to vision lose. Studying the diets of 4,000 adults, experts claim foods rich in omega-3s, vitamin C and E, zinc and antioxidants lower the risk of AMD. These low-sugar foods do not cause surges in blood pressure, which may harm retinas; Reuters reports.

Actually, last year researchers determined plant nutrients lutein and zeaxanthin, found in foods like spinach, kale and collard greens, promote eye health and prevent cataracts, while eating red meat 10 times week increases the likelihood of age-related macular degeneration by 47%.

In related news, a recent study showed vegetable-based diabetes offer superior diabetes control and omega-3 fatty acids, like those contained in walnuts, reduce inflammation linked to heart disease.

Osteoporosis Protection for Life!

You might not realize it, but osteoporosis is an epidemic, effecting 8 million American women and 2 million men, yes men can get it too, and causes 1.5 million bone fractures each year. Now, in his brand new DVD, Osteoporosis Protection for Life, Dr. Fuhrman discusses the causes of osteoporosis, offers prevention strategies, like nutrition and exercise, and dispels a lot of the misinformation about osteoporosis.

Then later in January, we learned not all exercise is created equal. Cyclists, despite being thin and fit, actually have more osteoporosis. That’s why researchers suggested bike-riders add running and weight-training to their workouts. Strong muscles mean strong bones and no hip fractures. Because just the other day a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed mortality, i.e. death risk, after a hip fracture lasts for at least 10 years.

So, if broken hips, brittle bones and drug side effects aren’t your thing, give Osteoporosis Protection for Life a try. Britons Choke Down Healthy Food...

Many Brits love a full English breakfast, but hate nutritious foods, like spinach, mushrooms, lentils, onions, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and other vegetables. But, they still eat them! According to a new report, during their lifetime, people living in the United Kingdom consume 4,000 portions of foods they dislike, because they know eating them is healthy. Nutritionists are astonished by the amount of food people are forcing themselves to eat; The Telegraph investigates.

Wow, that’s hardcore! But not nearly as tough as the mums who started dealing hamburgers on the playground when the local school tried to improve its menu, now that’s gangster!

Kids Talking Spinach...

I’m not much of a kid person. But these kids are pretty freaking cute. It’s a commercial for an insurance company, which stinks, but the little boy is priceless. It’s spinach, not Spanish!

Now, not all kids are enthusiastic about veggies. This little girl is totally whacked out about green beans. She REALLY doesn’t want them. Maybe she needs a visit from Captain Vegetable!
