Disease Proof
Coach Karl On Cancer
Head coach of the Denver Nuggets George Karl knows how serious cancer is. He recently celebrated his first anniversary free of prostate cancer. But the coach wants to know why more isn’t being done to shutdown cancer for good. Chris Tomasson of The Rocky Mountain News quotes Karl:
"I have no idea why there is no national program to cure cancer," he said Wednesday. "If I were a politician, that would be my first platform. Forty to 50 years ago, we said, 'Let's go to the moon.' Now let's cure cancer. Let's throw millions and millions of dollars in federal funding to wipe away the pain and the death that cancer causes."Regular readers know that most Americans can do a lot more to prevent cancer than they are currently doing. Even mainstream health organizations these days say that at least 30% of all cancers are because of lifestyle habits (poor diet, smoking and lack of exercise). Most people do not seem to want to hear it and much rather wait until somebody else does something, something that does not require them to change habits.
I'm surprised you posted this quote. The government has been "throwing millions and millions of dollars" at cancer ever since Pres. Nixon started the War on Cancer in the 1970s. Results to date, not quite zilch, but pretty marginal.
To be sure, the "War on Cancer" is directed, as the quote enjoins, to a CURE for cancer. A similarly large and energetic effort directed toward prevention might actually get somewhere. Especially since, in the case of prevention, we already pretty much know how to do it.
First of all, the "War On Cancer" is not intended to make cancer disappear. Its purpose is to pump up the profits and stock values of the corporations that market cancer cures. Improved nutrition, elimination of carcinogens from the environment, or anything else that would reduce the cancer rate, becomes the real enemy in the "war". If cancer were "shut down for good", the stocks of the corporations would tank for good.
